Clarifying the Real Causes of Knee Pain
While running itself isn’t bad for your knees, pain can happen if you’re not taking care of your body properly.
🟠 Overtraining: Increasing your mileage or intensity too quickly puts stress on joints, muscles, and tendons that haven’t had time to adapt. Jumping from zero to 20 miles a week without progression is a recipe for discomfort.
🟠 Poor Running Form: Overstriding (landing with your foot far in front of your body) creates excess impact on the knees. Combine that with a weak core or unstable hips, and the knee joint ends up compensating.
🟠 Inadequate Footwear: Your shoes matter—a lot. Wearing worn-out shoes or ones that don’t match your gait or arch type can alter your mechanics and shift undue stress to your knees. A gait analysis at a local running store can be a game changer.
🟠 Lack of Strength and Mobility: Weak hips, quads, and glutes mean your knees are doing more of the work than they should. Mobility issues, like tight hamstrings or calves, can also affect stride and shock absorption.
